CIG Internship Programme to Benefit Over 100 Students

Since the start of July, the Cayman Islands Government (CIG) has welcomed 92 Caymanian students as summer interns, with others set to join throughout the summer. The CIG will provide more than 100 students with practical work experience and expose them to future hiring managers, showcasing the Government’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of civil servants.

The recruitment has aligned with the Civil Service’s strategic goal to ‘Pursue Excellence in Talent Development’.

Last month’s participants in the annual internship programme gathered recently to hear inspiring stories and invaluable insights from various heads of departments within the Civil Service. The event provided an opportunity for interns to learn about the diverse career opportunities available within the civil and wider public service and to understand the dynamic paths that can lead to fulfilling careers.

Acting Deputy Governor, Gloria McField-Nixon, shared her own inspiring civil service journey, which began as an intern at Radio Cayman. She provided an overview of the extensive career options available within the Civil Service and highlighted the flexibility of moving across different departments to gain a broad spectrum of experiences. She also stated to the interns, “Every year, departments across the Civil Service look forward to the opportunities that CIG’s internship programme provides to work with such capable and diverse talent. I must commend you for using your summers productively, to network and to gain practical experience to kickstart your career or narrow your chosen fields of specialisation. You may find, like many young persons before you, that a summer internship ignites a career-long passion for public service where success is measured in our positive impact in “making lives better”.

The CIG’s current Employee of the Year, Zhane Rambaran, shared her Civil Service journey as well, highlighting her professional growth through the CIG mentorship programme and other key milestones in her career. Other speakers at the event included Marcia Mullings-Thompson from Poinciana, Marilyn Brandt; Deputy Solicitor General, Nathan Paget; Director of the Internal Audit Service, Simon Davis, Director of Public Prosecutions, and Uche Obi, Director of Lands and Survey. Each speaker recounted their unique career paths, emphasising the importance of being open to new opportunities and the often winding, yet rewarding, journey of professional growth within the Civil Service.

The interns, representing diverse fields of study such as graphic design, law, architecture, business management, tourism and hospitality, geography, accounting, economics, health sciences, and film production, were inspired by the speakers’ stories and advice.
