It was National Heroes Day, but a large number of residents, many of whom were school children turned up to participate in the now popular, annual, LIONS CORPORATE CUP, event on Cayman Brac. The event was staged on the grounds of the Administration Building.

Under the sponsorship of Cayman National Bank, all registered participants were given a T- Shirt. It was a fantastic sight to see residents mingling and chatting as they waited for commencement of the event.

After greetings from Lions president Elton and chairperson Lion Dionne Smith, the first event got under way to great cheering from the onlookers. This was the relay amongst the school children. First off was the group in the years 1-3 category, and this was followed by the group in the years 4-6 category. Parents were ecstatic as they cheered on their kids.

Then came the corporate cup main events- the walk and run. There were different team representations in these main events. The highlights were the team from the West End Primary School who competed against the adults in the corporate, Loop run. It was truly amazing to see their enthusiasm and determination. While the running event was in progress the corporate walk got underway. There were teams from SASI, ALL NATIONS UNITED PENTECOSTAL CHURCH, THE BIRTHDAY CLUB, THE COMMUNITY TEAM, THE SEVENTHDAY ADVENTIST CHURCH, WEST END STAFF, THE NATIONAL TRUST, and THE HIGH SCHOOL STAFF. In fact, the National Trust was given a special award for fielding the largest number of participants.

Mr. Barry, owner of Golden Jerk said, “This is an encouraging moment to see all these youngsters. I am glad to be a part of this as it highlights the need for community life and good health.”

Dan Bentley of Canada and member of the National Trust said, “This is a great community event. Glad to be a part of it. It is promoting the need to stay healthy while also developing community spirit and competition. The school children are fantastic and admirable to see so many out so early in the morning.”

As the winners of each event crossed the finish line there was great cheering amongst the supporters. The occasion attracted not only the school children, but residents of all ages.

On hand for the event was Mrs. Dora Sanford, Assistant Manager of Cayman National Bank on Cayman Brac. Beaming with excitement to see the great success of the event she said, “Cayman National Bank is all about giving back to the community. We have sponsored this event for more than years, and each it seems to get better. We are always excited to be a part of any event that will promote community development, competition and healthy lifestyle. We remain committed to the enhancement of this community.”

Mrs. Sanford was also the mainstay in handing out the awards to winners. The event concluded around 9:30 a.m.
