Elite women edge Sunset in penalties to lift CIFA FA Cup

In brief:

• Elite SC wins in penalty shootout to claim Women’s FA Cup.

• Elite and Sunset were knotted at 1-1 following the first 90 minutes and two extra periods.

• Seleste Ayala (Sunset), Kate Amigo (Elite) scored goals in regulation.

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands — Elite Sports Club’s women’s team lifted the Cayman Islands Football Association Women’s FA Cup on 2 June following a dramatic comeback victory over Sunset that ended in a penalty shootout.

Elite hit four of its shots from the penalty spot while Sunset only converted twice.

“It was not easy but we fought to the end,” Elite captain Deondra Kelly said. “I am very, very proud of my girls.”

While Elite emerged victorious, it was Sunset that opened scoring when Seleste Ayala converted with just seconds remaining in the first half mostly controlled by Sunset. The goal gave Sunset momentum heading into the second half, but Elite’s Kate Amigo equalized in the 57th minute.

“We know that this season we’ve had some challenges, but we wanted to win this,” Kelly said. “And I’m so proud that we were able to get the job done.”
