Flow, Cayman’s leading telecommunications provider, is proud to announce the launch of its innovative ‘Apprenticeship Program,’ a two-year initiative aimed at recruiting, training, and retaining highly skilled network technicians within the local technology industry.

Launched earlier this month, the Apprenticeship Program underscores Flow’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of technical experts by providing young recruits with valuable educational pathways and practical, on-the-job skills training in an immersive and interactive environment.

The program offers a well-rounded training experience, combining theoretical education with hands-on practical skills. Apprentices will learn from seasoned professionals, gaining insights and expertise crucial for their development as world-class telecommunications technicians.

“As an ever-evolving industry, telecommunications often face talent shortages, so our apprenticeship programme is geared predominantly towards the development of Caymanian nationals in the Technical/Engineering Field. The 2024 cohort will see five (5) new local apprentices enrolled for job training and placement at a cost of approximately KYD$30,000 annually per apprentice, together with on-the-job training programs and mentorship,” said Debra Alexander, Senior Manager, People Business Partner, Flow.

The five trainee apprentices in the 2024 cohort are Jonathon McLean (Field Technician Apprentice), Antwan Watler (Field Technician Apprentice), Daniel Chisholm (Field Technician Apprentice), Joseph Swaby (Field Technician Apprentice), and Daniel Tomlinson-Brown (Network Support/Dispatch Apprentice).

“The apprenticeship program has grown in its success over the years, and we have offered permanent career and job placement for five (5) apprentices since inception in 2021: Alejandro Paz (Field Technician), Dylan McLaughlin (Network Support Technician), David Whyte (Field Technician), Devine Lawrence (Field Technician), and Jai Dixon McKenzie (Field Technician).” Ms. Alexander continued

“We’re committed to bridging the technical skills gap to develop local capacity to meet the anticipated future workforce requirements within the Cayman Islands. By continuously harnessing the transformative power of technology to drive innovation, enhance connectivity, and improve the overall quality of life for our youth and communities. Together, we are building a future that is faster, smarter, and more connected than ever before.” said Susanna O’Sullivan, Vice President, of Cayman & Northern Caribbean, Flow.

Flow’s Apprenticeship Program follows the recent historic launch of mobile 5G, a move that ushered in the fifth generation of mobile technology across the islands. It was a doubly special moment for the Cayman Islands, as it became the first territory in the Caribbean to experience 5G connections.

Consumers in the Cayman Islands, including individuals, families, entrepreneurs, small businesses, and large enterprises, stand to benefit from enhanced connectivity, unprecedented speed and capacity, and seamless connections.
