Girls Softball – Game Report

Friday, February 3rd

Kirk Freeport 11, Coldwell Banker 10

The 2023 season of CILLA Girls Softball got underway at the Field of Dreams on Friday evening, February 3rd, as Little League celebrated the grand reopening of the beautifully remodelled complex. After a few speeches and player introductions, Coldwell Banker and Kirk Freeport took to the field, ready to kick off the new season.

Kirk Freeport opened the scoring with two runs in the 1st inning on a walk by Madison Malice and a two-run homer to the fence in right centre by Demae Lee. Coldwell Banker stormed back with five runs with Eowyn Hawkins crushing a homer to the fence in left centre, the hardest hit of her young softball career.

Kirk Freeport regained the lead with four in the 2nd with newcomers Nicole Kielczewki, Destini Rankin and Daniella Heard getting consecutive singles and scoring runs. Coldwell Banker immediately replied with three more runs, aided by four walks and a misplay in left field, allowing Jialy Archbold-McLaughlin to scamper all the way home after her hard-hit single.

Kirk Freeport got four in the 3rd, with three walks and a 2RBI single by Demae helping the cause. In the bottom of the 3rd Coldwell Banker failed to score as Kirk Freeport turned a double play and Demae struck out the next batter.

Kirk Freeport scored their final run in the 4th, as new player Aviela Ramirez drew a walk and used her speed to steal a run even though her team didn’t get a hit in the inning. In the bottom of the 4th, Coldwell Banker responded with two runs as Raegan Jefferson had a 2RBI single to bring home Maya Willis and Jialy. With two outs, and runners on second and third, Kirk Freeport catcher Renell Parchment made the defensive play of the game with a stretching catch for the final out, preserving the thrilling 11-10 win.

The two teams were evenly matched, and the new season promises to be very entertaining… and nail-biting! Eowyn and Demae were named co-players of the game for their home-run heroics and good defense.

Saturday, February 4th

Digicel 17, Logic 15

The second game of the week was played on Saturday and Logic and Digicel battled back and forth until Digicel eventually prevailed 17-15.

Digicel scored once in the 1st inning as Coco Windsor used her speed to score on a sharp single by Tracey Campbell. Logic tallied two runs as Avah Connors and McKenna Knapik hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, and both scored on RBI hits by Jeliyah McLean and Natalia Cugliari.

Digicel went quietly in the 2nd inning as Tracey retired the side in order, finishing with a strikeout. Logic got four runs in the bottom of the inning with Avah’s three run homer to deep right field being the huge hit.

Digicel came right back with five runs in the 3rd. Cosette Brendel led off with a walk and consecutive singles by Rio Windsor, Coco and Tracey got the inning going. All four would eventually score, and Renee Bryan later singled and scored the final run. The see-saw affair continued as Logic stormed right back with six runs of their own. Avah and McKenna each scored their third runs of the night in the inning and Avah had another big hit to right field that surely must have landed on the same exact piece of turf as before! This time it was a 3RBI double and her family and teammates let out huge cheers.

Undaunted, Digicel rallied with six runs of their own in the top of the 4th. The first six batters all scored, aided by Coco’s 2RBI double and Renee’s RBI single. Logic scored just one run in the inning, but it was good enough to give them a 13-12 lead. Tyana Tamasa singled and scored moments later when Deidre Edwards was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Digicel exploded for five runs in the 5th to take the lead for good. Leianni Dixon and Maya Cleaver drew key walks and more big hits by Coco and Tracey brought them home. McKenna and Jeliyah scored in the bottom of the 5th, but

Logic’s attempt at a comeback fell just short as the game ended with the bases loaded when Rio induced the final batter to hit a routine groundout to first.

Avah and Coco were named co-players of the game for their great hitting and all-round performances.

Games take place on Thursdays and Saturdays at 6:45 pm at the Field of Dreams. Admission is free.
