Grenada is celebrating its 50th year of independence and this week is one of the highlights of that calendar with the world renowned Spicemas.
It runs from August 7-14 and for many who enjoy its colour and exuberance, it is one of the Caribbean’s most underrated carnivals. The island comes to life with soca and calypso music and colourful processions. One of the carnival’s key events is the unique street party of J’ouvert. Thousands will emerge before dusk to join traditional jab-jab bands parade through the town, following the beat of the steel drums and coated in black paint, oil or mud. But that’s far from all the action of Spicemas. From the launch day of the festival to the concluding Monday Nite Mas, there are numerous events happening for visitors to get thoroughly immersed into Grenada’s vibrant culture and heritage. Traditional Mas players add a historical touch, bringing characters to life through authentic cultural performances.
