Health City Cayman Islands is seeking final applications from Caymanian university students who are studying or intend to study medicine or allied health for the hospital’s summer undergraduate internship program.
Mr Shomari Scott, Chief Business Officer at Health City Cayman Islands said the Health City Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) provided Caymanian university students with experience in a rich learning environment and access to a team of specialist physician mentors and supervisors.
“Participating in our summer internship program is a great way to learn more about careers in medicine, gain exposure to clinical and research opportunities, and have an enriching, hands-on experience,” he said.
“We have opportunities for up to ten interns and are offering our students a US$1,000 stipend,” Mr Scott said. “Our program has been developed over many years with considerable focus on offering interns broad exposure during their training. We provide a welcoming environment and comprehensive orientation, a broad case mix with great learning opportunities, and strong supervision and teaching.”
In its seventh year, the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) is an annual research and shadowing opportunity for Caymanian students on a medical or pre-medical track. SURF 2021 will take place 6 July - 30 July 2021 in a hybrid learning format.
Mr Charles D. Bush, Senior Education Coordinator at Health City Cayman Islands, said the internship program focused on case-based problem solving with students tasked with developing a comprehensive care-plan for a patient in a case study.
“SURF Fellows are mentored by one of our world-class doctors, attend lectures led by our specialist experts and, when possible, have the opportunity to view surgeries,” he said. “Our interns leave the program with a better understanding of tertiary-care medicine and with improved research and writing skills.”
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship is the tertiary education arm of Health City’s Healthcare Explorers education program.
Eligible candidates for SURF will be currently enrolled as an undergraduate at or a recent graduate of an accredited university, be candidates for a degree program leading to further studies or qualification in a medical field (e.g. BSc, BSN, MBBS), be in good academic standing with (or have graduated with) a GPA of 3.00 or higher, Caymanian or Permanent Resident and be 18 years old or older by 6 July 2021. Applications are due by 24 May 2021.
