Phlebotomists are individuals who safely collect and process blood samples.
The Health Services Authority (HSA) is continuing to invest significantly in various training programmes to enhance the expertise of Caymanians in the healthcare sector with its newly launched Phlebotomy Technician Certification Course, set to begin in August 2024. This comprehensive programme is designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge required to excel as a phlebotomy technician.
“We are proud to offer this course, which enhances professional skills and significantly contributes to the efficiency and high patient care standards in Cayman’s healthcare sector by preparing individuals to safely collect and process blood samples, which is a key component in medical diagnostics,” said Marsha Eleweanya, Training and Development Manager at the HSA. “This course provides a robust curriculum designed to prepare students thoroughly for certification and future employment opportunities.”
Chief Human Resources Officer Samantha Bennett stated, “As part of the HSA’s strategic plan for developing local human capital, this course provides a valuable opportunity for Caymanians to pursue a career in the medical field.”
The course will be offered in person, with expert instructors available to guide students through the theoretical aspects and the crucial hands-on technical skills in the practical sessions. Additionally, students will be exposed to hands-on clinical experience guided by preceptors in the HSA phlebotomy department. Students will be assessed at intervals throughout the course and have a summative assessment at the end of the programme to ensure they have met the standards to sit the accreditation examination.
Kamarla King, a phlebotomist of 14-years who works in the HSA’s Pathology Laboratory, stated that the profession of phlebotomy is crucial to the healthcare field: “As a phlebotomist, I’ve seen firsthand how a single vial of blood can unlock answers to life’s most pressing health questions. We draw and collect blood for laboratory tests, transfusions, research, or blood donations—helping to connect a patient’s symptoms and their solutions. Our precision and care set the foundation for effective treatment.”
She continued, “If you’re driven by the desire to make an indelible impact on healthcare, I urge you to seize the opportunity to become certified in phlebotomy. It’s a calling that marries science with compassion, and there’s no greater reward than knowing your expertise helps to heal.”
Classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM, and on the third Saturday of each month (subject to change) from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Hibiscus Conference Rooms, George Town Hospital. The course duration is approximately 6 to 8 months.
All course materials will be provided, and students will take a certifying exam at the end of the programme. Successful candidates will receive their Phlebotomy Technician Certification through HSA and will be eligible to sit for the American Medical Technologist accreditation exam.
Applicants must be Caymanian and/or have the Right to be Caymanian, with a High School Diploma with passes including Math, English, Biology or any other related subject. Professionals trained in allied health fields may also be eligible. Interested individuals must register by 31 July 2024 to secure a spot in this sought-after programme.
Please note that spaces are limited. The course fee is CI $2,500 per student, which includes all course materials, books, and lab supplies. A valid ID, Caymanian status and health insurance are required at registration.
