The Department of Sports (DOS) launched Women’s Month with an inspiring Women’s Empowerment Event on Saturday, March 1st. The event drew an energetic crowd of approximately 125 attendees, including family, friends, and colleagues who came together to celebrate confidence, resilience, and strength.
A highlight of the event was the participation of members from the DOS Community Fitness Groups (CFG), who took to the runway in outfits from their personal wardrobes. More than just a fashion showcase, the “Walk” was part of the CFG’s campaign to promote self-confidence and balance, regardless of physical challenges, body types, or personalities.
The event opened with an uplifting prayer by Rev. Mary Graham, followed by a heartfelt rendition of the national song by Renee Barnes. Assistant Chief Officer Melissa Whorms then delivered powerful remarks on behalf of Hon. Minister Isaac Rankine, MP, Minister for Youth, Sports & Heritage.
Rev. Graham also served as the keynote speaker, delivering an inspiring address on Women in Gratitude, which resonated deeply with the audience. Additional performances included stirring poetry readings by Betty Ebanks and Lorna Reid from the WBS and 6:30 AM CFG groups.
Author Lydia Jackman, known for Stress to Serenity, delivered an enlightening speech, while Miss Cayman Universe and Olympian Raegan Rutty shared a few words about the event’s theme, which aligns with her personal advocacy platform. She then took to the runway to warm applause.
One of the evening’s most memorable moments was the appearance of former Miss Universe and Miss World contestant Mrs. Theresa Pitcairn, the only Miss Cayman to reach the Top 8 of both international pageants. Her presence was especially inspiring for the participants, particularly those who took part in the Walk, describing it as an empowering, liberating, and truly enjoyable experience.
Events like these would not be possible without the dedication of the support team, volunteers, and sponsors. A heartfelt thank you goes out to CFG Volunteers: Coach Tristan, Volunteer James, and CFG Group Volunteers Ceronne Glasgow, Jessie Dickson, Vanda Powery, and Norma Richards, whose hard work and commitment played a crucial role in making the event a success.
The event was also made possible through the generous support of the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Heritage, the Department of Sports, CUC, Paul and Joyce Macey, Wayne Panton, and Crown Events and Rentals.
As Women’s Month continues, DOS remains committed to fostering confidence, empowerment, and community among women of all backgrounds.
