Jamaica has a new tourist attraction on the north coast, a gigantic mural in tribute to some of its music heroes.
The mural in Catherine Hall is a 750-foot-long collaborative piece on Howard Cooke Street in Montego Bay painted by international and Jamaican artists. Begun six months ago, the mural features over forty reggae and dancehall icons including Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Beenie Man, Yellowman and Garnett Silk.
The portraits are being painted on the grounds of the waterfront music venue that every year hosts SumFest, Jamaica’s largest and most prominent reggae concert, now in its 32nd year. It has now officially become known as the Reggae & Dancehall Wall of Fame.
Not yet complete, artists who have painted so far include Argentina’s Maxi Bagnasco (one of the world’s greatest portrait muralists), Lindz and Lamb from the US, Dasic Fernandez from Chile, Fernando Chamerelli and Saulo Metria from Brazil and local Jamaicans Pamela Chang and Taoszen.
