Conor McGregor returns to the octagon this weekend which means a great pay night for everyone involved. McGregor is worth over $100 million and has retired many times but being the highest earner in UFC always lures him back.
The Irishman is, undoubtedly, the biggest box office draw in mixed martial arts history. There have been better fighters, but none have had the same drawing power as McGregor.
All five of the most bought UFC pay-per-views ever were headlined by The Notorious. In fact, McGregor has seven of the top 10 highest bought UFC cards ever - and they are his last seven fights.
Purists were confused why Dustin Poirier took this third match with McGregor instead of moving onto a lightweight title fight. He comfortably stopped McGregor in the second round in their last fight six months ago after McGregor knocked out in the first round in their 2014 encounter.
Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira did instead and now the latter is the champion.
However, Poirier explained that his payday fighting McGregor dwarfs anything else and is too much to ignore. Being a husband and father means he needs to put priorities and responsibilities ahead of glory.
The winner is likely to fight for the belt next anyway, so it’s not like Poirier sacrificed much in the lightweight mix.
Number one on the list is McGregor’s infamous clash with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 which did a staggering 2.4 million buys, the only UFC card ever to amass more than two million.
