Promotions announced at Maples

L R James Meehan, Malachi Sweetman, Kerry Ann Phillips, Alex Howard, Ian Kirwan and Matthew Gardner

Maples Group has promoted five senior lawyers in its Cayman office, the firm has just announced.  Within the promotions, four new Partners were elected and one Of Counsel. The Group, which employs over 800 people in the Cayman Islands through its international law firm, Maples and Calder and its financial services firm, MaplesFS employs almost 3000 professionals in 16 locations worldwide.

Newly elected Partner Kerry Ann Phillips (Corporate) joined the firm as an articled clerk in 2007 and qualified into the Corporate team in 2009. She is also a member of the Latin American practice.  Alex Howard is now a Partner in the Funds & Investment Management team, having joined the team in 2017. He advises private equity funds, hedge funds and investment managers on investment fund formation, restructuring and fund transactions, as well as corporate and commercial matters. Ian Kirwan is a newly elected Partner in the Funds & Investment Management team, joining the team in 2019. His primary practice is in private equity and venture capital funds. James Meehan is also a new Partner in the Funds & Investment Management team, having joined the firm as a trainee in 2011 and qualified into the Funds & Investment Management team in 2014. He advises on the establishment, authorisation, operation and maintenance of all types of Irish domiciled investment funds.

The newly elected Of Counsel is Malachi Sweetman (Dispute Resolution & Insolvency). Malachi joined the firm’s Dispute Resolution & Insolvency team in 2010. He has extensive experience in commercial litigation and ADR across a broad range of financial and commercial disputes, in a number of jurisdictions.

These appointments increase the number of Partners both in the Cayman Islands and globally at the firm to an all-time high. In a release, Maples Group said the firm had grown exponentially over the past few years and was committed to training and advancing the next generation of lawyers to partnership through its dedicated programmes. These range from legal scholarships, internships and articles of clerkships, to secondments and mentoring programmes.
