The third phase of Operation Clyro is now well under way and the police continue to encourage all road users to be safe and make good choices while driving.
Operation Clyro, a road safety initiative that forms part of the National Road Safety Strategy which is aimed at ‘Safe Roads, Safe Cayman: The Road to Zero’, began on Monday 30th September and will continue to 14th October. The operation will ensure a greater presence of traffic officers on the road way, and the intention is to highlight and curb poor driving behaviour through education and enforcement, targeting offense such as speeding, DUI, inconsiderate driving and distracted driving.
Since the start of the campaign, more than 220 persons have been prosecuted for various traffic offenses. Of these just under 50 were issued for speeding and approximately 4 of those were issued to heavy equipment vehicles exceeding the speed limits, often carrying excessive loads. Approximately 95 tickets were issued to drivers of unlicensed vehicles.
Also, throughout the period, more than 43 motor vehicle collisions were reported to the police, one person was arrested on suspicion of DUI and two persons were warned for intended prosecution for careless driving.
As we approach the weekend and with all the social activities taking place, the RCIPS would like to remind the public that Operation Clyro is ongoing and that there will be a significant police presence on our roadways. We encourage everyone to drive safely and with courtesy, ensure that you do not drink and drive, but instead have a plan on getting home safely if you have been consuming alcohol, and reduce your speeds on the roadway, especially in areas with high pedestrian traffic and in adverse weather.
