Talk on The Street: Early Elections

With the announcement that the elections will now be more than one month earlier than previously scheduled, there has been a buzz around the country. Our reporter took to the street to gauge the public’s feelings on the subject. The official question posed was, “What do you think about the Governor’s announcement that elections will be earlier?” Below are the responses of 15 individuals.

George, Caymanian, 49:

“I think that this is a sign that the government is worried that they would lose control of the Parliament. Now, the other candidates could find their campaigns rushed.”

Henry, Caymanian, 46:

“I don’t have a problem with it. I think the government is going to completely change anyway, no matter what underhanded tricks the Premier tries to pull.”

Jenny, Caymanian, 56:

“This is about the no-confidence vote that the opposition called for against Mac. Now that can’t happen and stop him from running again.”

Kendra, Caymanian, 28:

“What the h… is wrong with this governor. He thinks that he just do anything he wants. And the Premier is just as bad.”

Julie, Caymanian, 21:

“If we could vote tomorrow, I would be okay with it. The date doesn’t matter to me.”

Gina, Caymanian, 47:

“It doesn’t bother me at all.”

Leon, Caymanian, 61:

“There must be something going that is scaring the PPM. Otherwise, they wouldn’t want this to happen.”

Wendy, Caymanian, 45:

“I worry about how this will impact the voters list. There are at least two people that I know that are turning 18 in the first week of May. They would have been able to vote before. Will they still be able to now?”

Frank, Caymanian, 24:

“This is something that I worry about because it could prevent a lot of candidates from getting a fair amount of time to run for election. Then, it could mean that we end up with the same basic politicians that we have now. Lord knows, we don’t need that.”

Brian, Caymanian, 52:

“The governor has the right to do what he did. Everyone should stop moaning and whining about it and just get ready to vote in April.”

Sabrina, Caymanian, 47:

“I don’t like it. It smells fishy.”

Christina, Caymanian, 21:

“Something is going behind the scenes. The Premier and his band have a plan to hold on to power.”

David, Caymanian, 29:

“Politricks. Nothing but Politricks.”

Daniela, Caymanian:

“I know this sounds strange and suspicious, but I am here to tell you right now that it is not like that. It is actually much worse than anything we could imagine. There is a big conspiracy in play here, and our freedoms and rights are under attack.”
