Cruise Ship docking on Cayman Brac

By Malachi Khan, Layman Scott High School

Just around 7 a. m. on Wednesday 12th March 2025 the Cruise Ship, “THE EXPLORA 1,” docked on the beautiful island of Cayman Brac. A large number of residents were on hand to welcome those on board. The ship was en route from Belize City.

The Explora boasts a capacity of around 700 passengers. Approximately 474 of them disembarked and came on land via the ship’s passenger boats. They were greeted by officials of the Tourism Department and District Administration. Recorded, local music greeted them as well. Many were visibly excited swaying back and forth to the rhythms of the music. Witnessing this memorable occasion were teachers and students at the schools on the island.

There were a variety of booths on display. The tourists interacted with those who manned them, as they learned about the items on display. They were intrigued by the local arts, crafts, and clothing with many making purchases to take as souvenirs. The turtles, wonderfully crafted by Miss Simone, the island’s famed Artist, generated the most excitement and discussion.

In addition, the passengers were treated to a variety of tours. The Little Cayman trip was truly a delight for those who participated. Visiting the caves was another exciting tour. Those who did not go along on the excursions and the fishing trip, opted to rent a vehicle to drive around the island even as others preferred walking and riding as they visited many business places and stores. Throughout their time many of them ventured out into the sea, catching a quick swim, taking photos and recording videos.

Furthermore, throughout their time at the dock, they refreshed themselves with local beverages such as lemonade, and fruit punch, while also enjoying some of the local food provided. In attendance to witness this auspicious moment were students and teachers of both the primary and only high school on the island.

Also, I had the amazing opportunity to chit- chat with a few of the passengers, two of whom were chefs. They were blown away by the hospitality and congeniality of the residents, and the pristine nature of the environment. Many expressed their desire to return but then it would be an official vacation.

Around 4:30 p.m. they began their return to the ship in preparation for departure. Every passenger could be seen with a bagful of various local arts, crafts and souvenirs as they were taken back to the ship. At approximately 6 p.m they set sail for their next port of call, Key West, Florida.
