UCCI CONTINUES EXCITING STEM SUMMER CAMPS TO INSPIRE FUTURE SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS

The University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) is excited to announce the upcoming STEM summer camps for 2024. This year, UCCI is also holding a camp in Cayman Brac due to the tremendous success and growing demand of its Grand Cayman camp.

The UCCI STEM summer camps offer students an incredible opportunity to explore various fields within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Activities will include 3D printing and design, vlogging, science experiments, robotics, drones, and much more. These camps aim to demonstrate how diverse and exciting STEM careers can be, beyond the traditional classroom setting.

Led by Ms. Antoinette Gayle, these camps are set to inspire the next generation of STEM enthusiasts with a range of engaging and educational activities. Due to the popularity of these camps, places normally fill within two hours, so early registration is highly recommended.

UCCI invites applications from students aged 10 – 13 who possess the following STEM Ambassador qualities: a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; a willingness to learn; excellent communication skills; an outgoing personality; and a sense of enterprise.

Participants will be selected from the applicants based on the merits of their intent to participate and their learning goals. To be considered for selection, students must submit a short essay with their application explaining why they want to attend the STEM camp.

The Cayman Brac camp, sponsored by the Ministry of Education runs from Tuesday- Thursday, July 2 - 4, 2024 from 9:00 am – 3:30 pm at the UCCI Cayman Brac Campus. This camp is free of charge to participants.

The Grand Cayman camp, which has been sponsored by Enterprise Cayman (CEC) since its inception in 2017, will run from Monday to Friday, July 8 - 12, 2024, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the UCCI Campus. Each participant will be asked to pay a nominal registration fee of $200 and sponsorship from Enterprise Cayman will cover the remainder of the camp costs.

The camp includes a welcome package, activity kits, lunch, snacks, and a certificate of participation. Students who attend the camp will receive a pack of materials, including robots and supplies, to continue their learning at home.

Ms. Antoinette Gayle, Assistant Professor at UCCI and STEM camp leader since its inception in 2017, commented: “STEM employment is among the fastest growing sectors globally. From computing and healthcare to engineering and more, STEM roles are pivotal in driving innovation and changing our world.

We want Cayman’s young people to understand the importance of STEM development and be excited about the possibility of becoming change agents in their communities.”

The STEM camps are made possible through the generous support of our sponsors with additional support in past years provided by the Water Authority Cayman Islands, which supplies reusable water bottles and thumb drives, and the Book Nook, which provides gift certificates as prizes for outstanding campers.

Application opens on Monday, June 3 and will close when the spaces are filled. The form can be found on the UCCI website at https://www.ucci.edu.ky/stem-programme
