UCCI President and CEO, Dr. Robert W. Robertson; Lead Rotarian, Ronald Henry; and Deputy Registrar & Manager, Brac Campus

Dr. Robert W. Robertson, President and CEO of the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI), addressed members of the Rotary Club of Cayman Brac last week, emphasizing the critical importance of developing a globally competitive workforce in the Cayman Islands.

During his well-received presentation to approximately 24 Rotary members, Dr. Robertson highlighted research indicating that technology skills, trades such as carpentry, electrical, and plumbing, along with soft skills including communication and critical thinking, are in high demand across the Cayman Islands.

“To compete in today’s challenging economic environment, all countries are engaged in strategically building workforce skills by focusing on employer needs,” said Dr. Robertson. “UCCI is developing short, flexible, industry-certified courses to meet the demands of employers and to prepare Caymanians to be ready for the future of work.”

The visit underscored UCCI’s commitment to its Cayman Brac campus, which serves as a vital educational hub for the Sister Islands. The Brac campus currently focuses on dual enrolment programmes for high school students and continuing education for adult learners. Dr. Robertson emphasized plans to expand offerings for adult learners on the island, addressing specific workforce needs of the Brac community.

“Our Cayman Brac campus is an essential part of UCCI’s mission to provide accessible, quality education throughout the Cayman Islands,” Dr. Robertson noted. “We’re looking to strengthen our presence by developing more programmes tailored to the unique economic and workforce needs of Cayman Brac residents.”

Dr. Robertson also noted that the Cayman Brac high school with its residential facilities presents an excellent opportunity for UCCI to host study abroad programmes for partner institutions. Additionally, he identified a need to train Cayman Brac adjunct faculty in online teaching methodologies, which would enable them to better collaborate with the main campus and deliver more diverse course offerings to Brac students.

The expansion of online learning capabilities would allow Cayman Brac residents greater access to UCCI’s full range of programmes without requiring travel to Grand Cayman, further demonstrating the university’s commitment to serving all Caymanian communities.
