Around 10:45AM, Thursday 27 March, police and other emergency services responded to a report of a person in distress in the ocean off South Church Street, in the vicinity Memorial Drive.
It was reported that the man had been snorkelling with a friend when he began experiencing difficulties. Members of the public swam out to assist the man and bring him back to shore.
EMS arrived at the scene and paramedics administered CPR before transporting the man to the hospital via ambulance, where he was later pronounced deceased by the attending doctor.
The man, age 49, was a cruise ship passenger visiting from the USA.
