Webster Wins: Young Sailor Takes Top Honour

Caymanian sailor, Charlotte Webster has won a gold medal in the U19 Female International Laser Class Association 6 (ILCA 6) at the UK ILCA Open & National Championships.

Racing in an Olympic-class single-handed dingy, Ms Webster’s victory on Friday (22 July 2022) comes after her silver at the same event last year, in the ILCA 4.7 class.

The 18-year-old’s win followed four days of races to qualify for the fifth and final day in Hayling Island. The eighth generation Caymanian beat a stiff competitive field in her age group, including Team GB’s top U19 competitor.

Speaking on Ms Webster’s win, Minister for Youth & Sports, Hon. Bernie Bush said: “In my ministerial capacity and on behalf of the Cayman Islands Government, I congratulate Charlotte on her most recent triumph. I am especially impressed about her victory given the challenging weather conditions that the UK is presently experiencing. Having known her since she was a toddler, I am delighted to applaud her growing success.

“I am always pleased and so very proud when young Caymanians excel in their chosen sports as is happening so often lately.”

The CI Sailing Club member and Cayman International School alumna, starts at the University of Exeter to study for a Bsc in Environmental Sciences this September. The Red Bay resident will be joining her college’s sailing team, which won the British University Championships (BUCKS) 2022 to become the UK’s top sailing university.
