CARE stands for Cayman Animal Rescue Enthusiasts. CARE focuses on awareness, prevention and education by engaging the hearts and minds of the community to make a change for the betterment of all people and animals alike.

Awareness comes through addressing the issue of animal welfare here in Cayman, and its effect on the community and population.

Prevention is through our Spay and Neuter programme, which we offer for free throughout the community for those who are unable to afford the procedure.

Education is through our kidsCARE and grassroots programmes.

Our annual costs for all three programmes run at over $100,000 per year. Our volunteers and our board of directors perform this work at no cost and we have zero administrative overheads. Every penny we raise goes directly into our three programmes and making a change for the betterment of all.

Did you know that since the 1970’s, research has consistently reported childhood cruelty to animals as the first warning sign of later delinquency, violence and criminal behaviour?

Through our education programme we have found that too many of Cayman’s children are being exposed to acts of abuse and violence against animals, as part of their day-to-day lives.

This programme, kidsCARE, is a long-term strategy to better animal welfare understanding in Cayman, by empowering empathy in our next generation.

We have been able to impact thousands of school children as we go into schools every Monday to educate on the basic needs of animals, spaying and neutering to avoid unwanted litters, and most importantly, open the conversation to allow the children to talk about any issues they may want to talk about. It is during these times that we hear about how some children are, unknowingly, often witnessing animal abuse.

A recent study found that in families under supervision for physical abuse of their children, pet abuse occurred in 88% of those families. Sadly, animal abuse doesn’t just stop at the animal in a lot of cases. Animal abuse is not just an animal issue, it is truly a social issue and we are passionate about instilling empathy to prevent it.

As we all know, prevention is better than cure, which is why our main programme is actually that of prevention, through our free community spay and neuter programme.

The reduction of stray animals creates safer and healthier communities by lowering the number of unwanted animals. To date, we have fixed well over 3,000 community dogs and cats for free through our programme.

Our third programme, Operation Grassroots, is where (when funds allow) we are able to bring veterinarians directly into underserved communities to examine, vaccinate, de-worm, provide preventatives and educate the community in their own backyards.

None of our three programmes are being offered by any other animal charity. We are not duplicating efforts as our focus has always been to complement efforts of other animal charities through prevention, education and awareness throughout the community.
