The University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) and Enterprise Cayman (EC) have today announced a new Digital Literacy pathway for the Cayman Islands which will combine the globally recognized teaching and learning standards of the University with the world-renowned industry expertise of Enterprise Cayman, making young Caymanians leaders in the technology and innovation sectors.
Dr. Robert W. Robertson, President, and CEO of UCCI, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration, “UCCI is thrilled to partner with Cayman Enterprise City through Enterprise Cayman. This collaboration marks a significant step towards addressing the national IT skills gap and will be a game changer for young Caymanians. Companies in the Cayman Islands have identified technical skills as critical for employment both today and in the future. Enterprise Cayman and UCCI reiterated their commitment to be part of the solution to addressing the national IT skills gap.
“The most successful educational outcomes come from public and private sector collaboration so that young people can study with world-class academics whilst getting input from industry-leading experts. Initially, our joint efforts will focus on developing a Digital Literacy Certificate to equip our students with not only essential IT skills but also globally relevant digital skills. These skills are increasingly recognized as crucial by local and international industries for employment today and in the future.”
This partnership will also involve a range of cooperative activities, including faculty and staff exchanges for training purposes, facilitating internship opportunities, participation in joint seminars, and exploring joint funding applications to enhance educational programmes.
Mr. Charlie Kirkconnell, Director of Enterprise Cayman and CEO of Cayman Enterprise City, highlighted the longstanding relationship between the institutions: “CEC has been a committed partner of UCCI for many years, providing internship opportunities that help bridge the gap between academic studies and real-world application. Our continued collaboration with UCCI underscores our dedication to cultivating a highly skilled workforce in the Cayman Islands. The new Digital Literacy Certificate will be a huge boost to the jobs market in Cayman and will provide much-needed digital skills for all aspects of the community.”
This partnership not only signifies a shared commitment to advancing educational opportunities in the Cayman Islands but also ensures that both UCCI and EC remain at the forefront of fostering innovation and technology development in the region.
The Digital Literacy Certificate will launch in Fall 2024.
